Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI answer engines to find, understand and cite. Answer engines include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. These tools give the user one written answer, not a list of links. AEO helps your brand become part of that answer.
How answer engines find and use content
An answer engine is an AI tool that writes a direct answer to a question. Most answer engines use web content to write that answer. The process has four steps:
- Crawl. A crawler reads the pages on your website.
- Index. The engine stores the content so that it can find it again.
- Retrieve. When a user asks a question, the engine selects pages that match the question.
- Answer. The AI model writes an answer from those pages. Some engines show links to the sources.
Each answer engine uses its own crawler. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. Anthropic uses Claude-SearchBot for Claude search. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Google AI Overviews use the normal Google Search index.
If your robots.txt file blocks these crawlers, the engines cannot read your pages. Then they cannot cite you.
What AEO includes
AEO is a set of tasks. Each task makes your content easier for an answer engine to read, trust and quote.
- Crawler access. Let answer-engine crawlers read your site in robots.txt. Give them a sitemap.
- Direct answers. Start each page with a short, clear answer to its main question.
- Question headings. Use the questions that your customers ask as headings.
- Structured data. Add schema.org markup in JSON-LD format. Describe your organization, products, prices and FAQs.
- Consistent facts. Use the same business name, prices and descriptions on every page and profile.
- Sources and data. Cite sources and add specific facts. In one research study, these changes made content appear more often in AI answers. Read about the study.
- An llms.txt file. Give AI tools a short text summary of your site and its key pages.
- Visibility tracking. Ask AI tools your customers' questions on a schedule. Record when they mention you.
What AEO cannot do
AEO cannot guarantee a mention. AI answers change from one request to the next. Each engine also uses different sources.
Google states that there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search. Google also states that no special schema is necessary.
So treat AEO as a way to increase your chances, not as a promise. Good SEO is the base. AEO adds clear answers, clear facts and measurement on top of that base.
How to measure AEO
Rank tracking does not work for AI answers, because there is no fixed list of positions. Use these measures instead:
| Measure | What it shows |
|---|---|
| AI share of voice | The percentage of answers that mention your brand, compared with competitors. |
| Prompt coverage | The number of tracked questions where your brand appears. |
| Citations | How often an engine links to your pages as a source. |
| Competitor mentions | Which brands the engines recommend when they do not recommend you. |
AEMFix measures all four across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Claude. See how AEMFix works.
AEO questions and answers
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No. Search engine optimization (SEO) helps a page rank in a list of search results. AEO helps a brand appear inside an AI answer. Both need pages that crawlers can read and index. Read AEO vs SEO for a full comparison.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
The two terms mean almost the same thing. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the research term for AI tools that write answers. Many teams use AEO and GEO as one practice. Read What is GEO for the origin of the term.
Does schema markup guarantee that AI cites my brand?
No. Schema markup gives crawlers clear facts about your business. It does not force an AI tool to mention you. Google states that no special schema is necessary for AI Overviews. Clear structured data still removes doubt about names, prices and offers.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Results vary. Crawlers must visit your pages again, and AI tools update their answers at different speeds. Measure your visibility every week and compare the trend over several months.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is optional. It is a proposed standard from 2024 that gives AI tools a short summary of your site. Not all AI tools read it. It is a small text file, so the cost to add it is low.
Can AEMFix do AEO for my business?
Yes. AEMFix tracks your brand in AI answers, finds the prompts where you are missing, and publishes content to fix the gaps. For a one-time setup, the AEO & GEO Starter Package creates the structured data for your business page.
