Search engine optimization (SEO) helps a page rank in a list of search results. Answer engine optimization (AEO) helps a brand appear inside an answer that an AI tool writes. SEO is the base, because AI engines must find and index a page before they can use it. AEO adds direct answers, clear facts and AI visibility tracking on top of SEO.
AEO and SEO compared
| Topic | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page high in a list of links. | Get the brand mentioned or cited in an AI answer. |
| Where the result shows | Search results pages in Google and Bing. | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. |
| What the user sees | Ten or more links. The user selects one. | One written answer. Some engines show source links. |
| Content format | Pages that match a keyword and its intent. | Direct answers, question headings, specific facts and cited sources. |
| Structured data | Helps with rich results in search. | Gives AI crawlers clear facts about names, offers and prices. |
| Crawlers | Googlebot and Bingbot. | Googlebot, plus OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. |
| Main measures | Rankings, clicks and organic traffic. | AI share of voice, prompt coverage, citations and competitor mentions. |
| Stability | Rankings change slowly. | Answers can change from one request to the next. |
What AEO and SEO share
AEO and SEO use the same technical base. Both need these items:
- A robots.txt file that lets crawlers read your pages.
- A sitemap that lists your important pages.
- Pages that are indexed in Google and Bing.
- Fast pages that work on mobile devices.
- Helpful content that people want to read.
Google states that there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search.
Where AEO is different
AEO writes for the answer, not for the click
An AI engine takes facts from your page and puts them in its own answer. So each page must state its main answer in the first few sentences. The answer must also make sense without the rest of the page.
AEO needs more than one engine
SEO teams often focus on Google. AEO must cover each AI engine, because each engine uses its own crawler and its own sources.
AEO measures mentions, not rankings
There is no position one in an AI answer. So AEO measures how often the engines mention your brand, compared with competitors. Read how to measure AEO.
AEO values evidence
In the GEO research study, content with quotations, statistics and cited sources appeared more often in AI answers. Keyword stuffing did worse than the unchanged content. Read about the study.
AEO vs SEO questions and answers
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI engines must crawl and index your pages before they can use them. Google states that AI Overviews use the same indexing rules as normal Search. So a weak SEO base also makes AEO weak.
Can a page rank well in Google but not appear in AI answers?
Yes. An AI engine selects a small number of sources for each answer. Each engine also uses different sources. So you must measure AI visibility separately from rankings.
Which should I do first, SEO or AEO?
Fix the SEO base first. Make sure crawlers can read your pages, and make sure your pages are indexed. Then add direct answers, structured data and AI visibility tracking.
